FEMM and Fertility Awareness

Fertility Awareness is a lifestyle choice for women to monitor their reproductive health and hormones by monitoring their menstrual cycles. Each cycle is like a unique record of a woman's health; through monitoring a variety of fertility signs a women can know where in her cycle she is and what to expect from her body moving forward. Tracking the monthly cycle can aid a couple in avoiding or achieving pregnancy by identifying ovulation through evidence based protocols called FABMs, or Fertility Awareness Based methods. The FEMM App is an excellent tool for tracking fertility signs and practicing fertility awareness.

Ovulation is a sign of health!

Ovulation is a sign of health because it relies on the interaction of more than a dozen hormones; when healthy ovulation occurs, it shows that a woman's body is functioning well and that all her hormones are in proper balance. When the cycle becomes abnormal, such as with heavy painful bleeding, severe mood changes or very long or short cycles, it serves as a warning that we should be looking more closely at her overall health.

What happens next?

FEMM is into the details. Patients interested in establishing for FEMM medical management should anticipate a detailed initial consultation to review their health history, cycle charting, and symptoms.  Laboratory studies are necessary to review hormone levels and an ultrasound is helpful to visualize the reproductive organs. As the laboratory studies do require multiple samples over a 2 hour period, we'll often draw the labs in office after establishing an IV; this eliminates the need for serial lab sticks. Due to inconsistent insurance coverage for labs, some patients elect to pay cash for the initial blood work. After testing, anticipate a follow up appointment to determine what medications and lifestyle recommendations can help achieve your goals. We'll then work together with regular follow ups to work to monitor your response to treatment and adjust the plan as necessary. Couples experiencing difficulty with infertility should anticipate both the man and the woman to be evaluated.   IMG North of the Mountain does not replace traditional gynecology services; rather restorative reproductive medicine seeks to augment standard gynecologic care and can serve as a lower cost, less invasive, more natural option for patients experiencing infertility than IVF or artificial reproductive technologies.
